Electrical Engineer Job Description
Ion Storage Systems creates batteries that are safer, lighter, and enable form factors with tighter packing density that enhance system performance. We are backed by leading venture capital firms including Alsop Louie Partners, Clear Creek Investments, VoLo Earth Ventures, and Toyota Ventures and recently closed an oversubscribed Series A funding round in mid-2022 to enable the growth of the team and commercialization of the technology.
We offer an inclusive environment with opportunities for growth and believe that a thriving workspace leads to a thriving company. We hope you will contact us to learn more and to be a part of our diverse, collaborative team!
We are looking to add a full-time Electrical Engineer to our team in Beltsville, MD. This role will be hands-on and central to developing and supporting electromechanical systems, robotic tooling, and custom equipment used in our cell assembly line. You'll work closely with mechanical, automation, and process engineers to bridge electrical, mechanical, and control design in our growing production environment.
This position is ideal for someone who enjoys building, debugging, and repurposing complex systems. We're looking for a creative problem solver who can reverse engineer a broken system, identify failure points, and bring it back to life, or rewire and rebuild it to do something entirely new. Whether it's fixing production equipment, adapting hardware for new use cases, or prototyping from scratch, this role requires someone who's both inventive and hands-on.
Responsibilities:
Design, integrate, and debug electrical systems and mechatronic subsystems used in manufacturing equipment and robotics.
Build and wire control panels, design circuits, and select components for motors, sensors, and actuators
Collaborate with the mechanical team to co-develop robotic tooling and automation fixtures, ensuring tight integration between mechanical and electrical systems.
Perform hands-on prototyping and support iterative development.
Diagnose and repair electrical and mechanical issues in production or lab equipment.
Repurpose existing components or systems for new functions through creative adaptation and design modification.
Support SolidWorks-based mechanical designs with electrical integration and cable routing.
Create wiring diagrams, system schematics, and documentation for builds.
Collaborate with operations and engineering teams to transition prototypes into robust production tools.
Participate in equipment design reviews with external vendors, providing feedback on electrical and controls design, system integration, and manufacturability.
Support the operations team with facility-related electrical topics, including power distribution, load calculations, and utility planning.
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related technical field.
1+ years of experience in electronic or electromechanical systems, with strong hands-on involvement.
Strong understanding of how electrical, mechanical, and software systems interact in automation or robotic applications.
Demonstrated ability to fix, rewire, reconfigure, or rebuild complex systems-electrical or mechanical-to restore functionality or adapt them for new purposes.
Experience with motion control systems, motor drivers, feedback systems, and electromechanical integration.
Skilled in troubleshooting electronics, wiring, and control systems using tools like multimeters, oscilloscopes, and diagnostic equipment.
Ability to read and create electrical schematics and mechanical drawings.
Experience with control hardware: relays, switches, sensors, actuators, and low-voltage systems.
Team-oriented and proactive in a fast-paced, hands-on environment.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with PLCs, microcontrollers, or embedded systems.
Familiarity with SolidWorks and electrical integration in 3D CAD assemblies.
Hands-on fabrication experience: 3D printing, machining, or basic prototyping.
Comfort working with limited documentation, reverse engineering systems, and modifying off-the-shelf equipment.
Enthusiastic about building, fixing, and optimizing systems-whether in the lab, on the floor, or at the bench.
Experience with lithium-ion or other battery manufacturing equipment is a plus.
