Ion Storage Systems is seeking a driven and independent scientist to join our team in developing our proprietary bilayer solid electrolyte for next-generation lithium metal batteries. The successful candidate will leverage their applied knowledge and experience to advance our solid electrolyte technology. The Technology Investigator will spearhead material and process innovation with ceramic electrolyte materials, focusing on synthesis, material processing, sintering, and characterization of the ceramic, with an eye on impactful battery performance improvements. The preferred candidate has demonstrated experience in scouting for outside technologies and partners and collaborating with third parties and other projects stakeholders. The ideal candidate is energized by challenges and wants to be part of a fast-paced startup to make an impact on today's global energy challenges. The position reports to the Director of Innovation.

Key Responsibilities

The candidate will be responsible for identifying companies, universities, or other groups that have solutions to specific technical objectives and engaging the company to build the relationship, perform diligence on the group's technology, and establish the appropriate business relationship with ION. This person will work with ION Scientists and Engineers for technical diligence and as otherwise needed.

  • Apply skills and experience in identifying potential ceramic technologies and technological partners, procuring technical samples that meet ION requirements
  • Accelerate the development and scale-up path for ceramic bilayer electrolyte processing and sintering by rapid thermal annealing or alternative process
  • Primary contact in dealing with partnership obligations and opportunities, relationship issues
  • Initiate and support feasibility demonstration projects with R&D and Engineering directed toward achieving company goals
  • Effectively communicate progress and critical findings internally and to project partners
  • Identify new methods or measurements to increase understanding and knowledge
  • Take the initiative to anticipate and solve problems and help with other operations
  • Look for opportunities to improve and invent new materials and methods

Required Qualifications:

  • B.S., M.S., or Ph.D. in Materials Science & Engineering, Chemical or Ceramic Engineering, Chemistry, Glass Science, or related field
  • 8+ years of industrial experience in materials research and development
  • 6+ years of experience with materials synthesis, processing, and production
  • 3+ years of experience with technology scouting and building partners relationship
  • Demonstrated ability to learn and innovate
  • Ability to analyze and resolve complex technical or relationship problems quickly and independently.
  • Excitement to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, dynamic R&D environment
  • Ability to communicate clearly, openly, and effectively
  • Excellent organizational skills

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with ceramic product development and ceramic manufacturing methods
  • Experience with and knowledge of solid electrolyte materials
  • Familiarity with solid oxide fuel cells, ceramic capacitors, and/or battery electrochemistry
  • Experience with a diverse range of materials analytical techniques such as SEM, FTIR, XRD, etc.
  • International business experience and comfort with cultural diversity
