The Sr Cell Mechanical Design Engineer III/IV will perform critical engineering work to design and model our first and future generations of state-of-the-art solid state batteries. Responsibilities include developing CAD models of cells for internal and external use, developing manufacturing roadmaps, performing tolerance analyses, and collaborating with partners to incorporate manufacturing and technical limitations into our cell designs. In addition, you will collaborate with R&D teams on cell prototypes and development work. This will be in the support of building out ION's pilot and production manufacturing lines at our brand new facility. The Sr Cell Mechanical Design Engineer III/IV will be part of a rapidly growing Manufacturing Engineering team that works closely with other engineers and scientists as part of a fast-moving, cross-functional team. The applicant should have good communication and interpersonal skills and be comfortable working proactively and independently in a fast-paced environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Create CAD models, drawings & tolerance analysis package for current and future solid state lithium metal cells.
  • Manage design for manufacturing by leveraging a deep understanding of cell design & process limitations.
  • Develop cell and component DFMEA.
  • Support the creation of Equipment Specifications, Product Specifications, Bill of Materials, and other related documentation to support the acquisition, installation, and commissioning of cell equipment.
  • Analyze cell performance data with R&D to improve designs in pursuit of improved performance, manufacturability and cost.
  • Collaborate with cell materials scientists to co-develop and execute cell concepts to optimize performance such as energy density, power density, cycle life, and mechanical properties.
  • Provide essential feedback to the R&D team on development required to improve scalability as we build a state-of-the-art manufacturing process. The role will be critical to our growth - bring bold yet practical ideas and work with the team to make them a reality.
  • Travel: <10% Expected. Ability to occasionally travel both domestically and internationally.

Required Qualifications:

  • Direct experience with lithium ion or other battery cell automated assembly equipment. Exceptional automation experience from other industries may be considered.
  • Ability to develop CAD models of cells for internal and external use. Ability to do simple static stress simulation, tolerance stack analysis, etc.
  • General knowledge in lithium-ion cell chemistry and cell design principles.
  • BS in Mechanical Engineering or Electrical Engineering.
  • 3+ Years of Industrial Manufacturing Experience and general knowledge in lithium-ion cell chemistry and cell design principles.
  • Proficient understanding of the relationship between cell design and cycle life, calendar life, energy density, power/charging capability, and safety.

Desired Qualifications:

  • 2+ Years experience with lithium ion, solid state lithium metal, or other battery cell automated assembly equipment.
  • Ability to perform failure analysis on prototype and production cell design and ability to identify root causes and corrective actions to address identified issues.
  • Experience with joining methods such as laser & ultrasonic welding, forming/stamping, extrusion, etc.
  • General knowledge of lithium-ion processes, such as coating, web-handling, pick and place, ultrasonic and/or laser welding, pouch and/or prismatic cells, and direct metal joining.
  • Proficiency in quality tools utilized in new product development and manufacturing systems including SPC, design of experiments and statistical analysis.
  • General understanding of material metal and polymer processing techniques and metallurgical failure analysis.
  • Prior experience in scaling up new manufacturing processes from lab/pilot to production scale.
