Ceramic Scientist II/III

ION is seeking a driven individual to join our team in developing our next-generation lithium metal battery. The Ceramic Scientist will leverage their experience in ceramics/glass processing and foundational knowledge in materials science to advance our solid electrolyte technology. The role will focus on material processing, green body sintering, and characterization of the ceramic, with an eye on transitioning from bench to pilot scale manufacturing. The ideal candidate is energized by challenges and wants to be part of a fast-paced startup to make an impact.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Apply materials background to accelerate the development and scale-up path for ceramic electrolyte processing and sintering
  • Identify ceramic processing variables that are critical to quality and determine how to measure, control, and optimize them
  • Lead ceramic R&D projects – designing and executing experiments in collaboration with the team, and effectively communicating progress and critical findings
  • Identify and implement new methods or analytical measurements to increase understanding
  • Support the team by taking the initiative to solve problems and helping with other operations
  • Look for opportunities to improve processes for better reproducibility, yield, and safety
  • Maintain lab cleanliness and promote environmental health and safety in the daily work environment

Required Qualifications:

  • M.S. or Ph.D. in Chemical or Ceramic Engineering, Chemistry, Materials Science, Glass Science, or related field OR B.S. + 4 years of experience in ceramic or glass manufacturing or R&D
  • Prior experience conducting research in a laboratory or industrial setting
  • Experience with solid electrolytes, solid oxide fuel cells, capacitors, or thermal processing of ceramics/glasses
  • Excitement to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, dynamic R&D environment
  • Ability to communicate clearly, openly, and effectively
  • Excellent organizational skills

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with ceramic or glass processing and manufacturing methods at pilot or production scale e.g., coating methods, kiln operations, and product QC
  • Trained in Design of Experiments and Root Cause Analysis
  • Experience with and knowledge of solid electrolyte materials
  • Familiarity with fuel cell and/or battery electrochemistry
  • Experience with materials analytical techniques such as SEM, particle size analysis, and XRD
