We are looking to add a full-time Battery Scientist I or II B.S./M.S.-level to our team in Beltsville, MD. This position reports to the Cell R&D Manager and will target improved understanding of our next-generation lithium metal battery technology at the cell level. This work will be achieved through characterization of component materials, assembly and testing of batteries, electrochemical experiments, and data analysis. Candidates for this position should possess a strong desire to learn new experimental and analytical techniques along with the underlying electrochemical and mechanical fundamentals.

Responsibilities:

Perform research on battery cells and component materials using electrochemical experiments, mechanical characterization, materials characterization, and destructive physical analysis

Fabricate lithium metal batteries and conduct testing with a focus on rigor, repeatability, and statistical analyses in an industrial setting

Design and fabricate custom tools and fixturing for battery cell assembly

Design experiments to analyze the mechanical properties of battery cells and cell components

Effectively document and communicate experimental design, results, and uncertainties

Identify opportunities to improve R&D processes for better reproducibility, yield, and safety

Maintain lab cleanliness and promote environmental health and safety in the daily work environment


Required Experience:

B.S. in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, or related field

M.S. with an experimental research focus OR at least 3 years industry experience

Laboratory-based research work in engineering or applied sciences

Experimental measurement and analysis of mechanical properties of materials and components



Required Skills:

Demonstrated ability to design experiments to measure mechanical properties and relate to observed performance and outcomes

Excitement and ability to design and build apparatus for custom experimental design

Computer-aided design software SolidWorks, Fusion360 and 3D printing

Strong understanding of structure/property relationships

Data analysis using programming languages such as Python and Matlab

Ability to communicate clearly and effectively

Excellent organizational skills


Encouraged, but not required:

Fabrication and testing of electrochemical cells, including voltammetry, galvanostatic charge-discharge, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, etc.
